A number of excursions and treks can be booked locally in the town which, although small, offers some interesting shopping and a few quite acceptable hotels and restaurants.
You can fly to Banlung on President Airlines twice a week. Getting there overland is a little more complicated and is only recommended for the most hardy travellers. Initially you must make your way from Phnom Penh to Kampong Cham either by taxi (2 hours, 8000 Riel) or ferry (15,000 Riel) and then take a ferry from Kampong Cham to Stung Treng (9 hours, $15). Alternatively, go via Kratie - taxi (5 hours, 13000 Riel) or ferry (5 hours, 30000 Riel) and then take a ferry from Kratie to Stung Treng (5 hours, $7). That's just the first leg! Once in Stung Treng, take a shared taxi or truck to Banlung (25000 Riel, 3.5 hours in the dry season or 5-10 hours in the wet). Good luck!
