Two hours east of Kampot is Kep, once the playground of the well-heeled from Phnom Penh but now little more than the waterfront site of derelict mansions and villas and a fish market where you can eat the local seafood very inexpensively in a grass hut near the (unspectacular) beach.
Kep is a quiet, sleepy place and makes an enjoyable day trip from Kampot Town.
Kep is easily reached from Kampot. Most people take a taxi for the 25 kilometre, 30-45 minute trip. It is also easy to get there by moto-trailer, as the locals do. However, if you choose this rustic form of transport, make sure you arrange some return transport before you leave as options for the return journey dry up as the afternoon grows late.
If you go independently by bicycle or motor cycle, follow the road from Kampot to the White Horse Monument and turn right. At the next main turnoff, turn right again to the beach and market area. A motorcycle with a driver will charge you about $6 for the round trip.
