There is a wide variety of accommodation in Vietnam available to the independent traveler.
The Government and foreign companies are investing heavily in the establishment of new 5-star accommodation in all major cities and tourist destinations.
There is also a plethora of cheaper accommodation available for those traveling on a budget and, in between the two, a good choice of 2 or 3-star establishments offering all the comforts you need at a fraction of the cost you would expect to pay in your own country.
Luxury, international hotels and resorts are plentiful but expect to pay what you would anywhere else in the world for that standard of accommodation.
Most budget accommodation is on a "walk in" basis and advanced bookings are only necessary for luxury hotels and mid-range accommodation.
Keep in mind though that accommodation gets more difficult to find as the day gets on and some travellers prefer to book in advance to avoid dissappointment and/or the midday heat.
Even the most basic of hotels provide towels, soap and hot water and you can chose from fan or air-conditioned rooms, depending on your requirements.
In nearly all establishments, cable television is available, although some have more overseas channels than others. Even quite simple, inexpensive rooms have mini-bar facilities, although everything you could need is readily available within a few steps from your hotel.
Rates vary, of course, but starting from as little as US$7 per night, you can stay very comfortably, safely and centrally in major towns all over Vietnam.
In the major cities, Ho Chi Minh City, Hue and Hanoi there are areas where travelers congregate and hotels, restaurants and travel booking offices are all located together so shopping around for your travel requirements has never been easier.
