- 1 January - Visit Malaysia year 1990 officially began
- 22 January – 15 people were killed in a collision between FRU riot police vehicles, tankers lorry, a passenger bus and 10 cars at kilometre 32.5 of Karak Highway not far from Genting Sempah Tunnel in Gombak, Selangor.
- 1 February - Kuala Lumpur celebrates 100 years of local authority
- March - The Malaysian General Elections. Kelantan now under PAS party.
