Predicted Events

2074

• The Environmental Protection Agency will release the "Dredged Material Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement" which is a 73 year study (2001 - 2074) detailing the effect of waste material dumping in certain reservoirs in the United States.

2075

• The United Nations estimates that the world population will peak at 9.1 billion.^[1]

2076

• Sedna - In 2076, around May 31, the planetoid 90377 Sedna is expected to reach its perihelion, in other words, reach the closest it can get, orbit-wise, to the Sun. It is expected to reach a distance of 76 AU, or 76 times the distance Earth is from the Sun. Sedna has a highly elliptical orbit, thus it is difficult to locate —at its aphelion, it reaches about 942 AU. This date is subject to adjustment as Sedna's orbit is still being refined.
• This year will be the tricentennial of the United States.

2078

• November 14 - Transit of Mercury
• At the end of this year, all members of Generation X that remain alive will have reached 100 years old.

• Bede, computed that the world would end in 2076, extrapolating from Biblical references and the year of Jesus' birth^[2]

Fictional references

• The 4th Edition of Shadowrun takes place in the 2070's.
• The Dexter's Laboratory movie, Ego Trip, has some scenes that take place in 2070.
• In Judge Dredd (and the 2000 AD fictional universe in general) 2070 was the year President Robert L. Booth started the Atomic Wars. Booth, last president of the United States, was deposed. The following year the Battle of Armageddon took place leading to the defeat of Booth's forces.^[3]
• The events of the anime series Cowboy Bebop take place in 2071. The events of Cowboy Bebop: The Movie take place during Halloween of that year.
• The Nicktoon My Life as a Teenage Robot takes place in 2072.
• The computer game System Shock is set in 2072, as does the computer game Deus Ex: Invisible War in 2072.
• The movie Equilibrium takes place in 2072.
• In The Matrix short The Second Renaissance, the first robots are designed somewhere around this 2072.
• The Evil Dexter clone from Dexter's Laboratory as mentioned in the episode "Over Labbing", will destroy Dexter in this 2072.
• The back-story to Antihero for Hire lists 2075 as the year Canada invaded the United States with an army of genetically modified dinosaurs.
• Robert A. Heinlein's book The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress begins on May 13 2075.
• The manga and anime series Planetes takes place in the year 2075.
• The new Outer Limits episode Final Appeal takes place in 2076.
• Lydia Morehouse's Archangel Protocol takes place in 2076.
• In Robert A. Heinlein's book The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, the Lunar Declaration of Independence is sent to Earth on July 4, 2076; much of the book takes place in 2076.
• In Doctor Who novel Only Human by Gareth Roberts, Ebola cure is discovered in 2076.
• The room number in the Flamingo that the most violent part of Raoul Duke and Dr. Gonzo's acid trip occurs in the movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
• In the computer game Fallout a nuclear world war takes place in 2077.

• PlayStation 9 is a fictitious gaming device that was used in commercials to advertise the 2000 release of the PlayStation 2 in 2078.
• In 2079, according to the pilot episode of the science fiction series Star Trek: The Next Generation, humanity is still recovering from the "Post-Atomic Horror" and criminals are "guilty until proven innocent".
