Alliance for a Secular and Democratic South Asia
The Alliance for a Secular and Democratic South Asia is an organization founded in the Boston area of North America by South Asian expatriates which claims to seeking to combat sectarianism, pogroms and discrimination, and to promote Democratic reforms and secularism in South Asia. Though their work is focused on India, the membership is predominantly of Pakistani descent or of Indian Muslims.
The organization was founded during the December 1992 - January 1993 riots in India which followed the Hindu Right's attack upon and demolition of the Mosque in Ayodhya-Faizabad, U.P., India, and the follow-on anti-Hindu riots in Pakistan and Bangladesh.
The Alliance aims to counter religious intolerance and to campaign for peace and in the region. They have also campaigned for the rights of people who have been persecuted by religious extremists, such as Taslima Nasrin.
