Barnett Effect

(Redirected from Barnett effect)

The Barnett Effect is the spontaneous magnetization of a ferromagnetic body when spun on its axis. The magnetization occurs parallel to the axis of spin. It was first reported by S. J. Barnett in 1925. Barnett was motivated by the report of Einstein-de Haas effect, which descibes magnetizing a ferromagnet can induce a mechanical rotation. He instead looked for the opposite effect, ie. a spinning ferromaget changing its magnetization.
