Beans, Beans, the Musical Fruit
(Redirected from Beans, Beans, the Magical Fruit)
"Beans, Beans, the Musical Fruit" is a children's song about the capacity for beans to contribute to flatulence. The song is also variously known as "Beans, Beans, the Magical Fruit" and "Beans, Beans, the Wonderful Fruit". One variation of the song is titled "Beans, Beans, They're Good for Your Heart."
In all variations of the song, the lyrics reference the high amounts of oligosaccharides present in beans. Bacteria in the large intestine digest these sugars, producing carbon dioxide and hydrogen; these gasses are expelled from the body as flatulence.
Lyrics
While the origins of the song are unclear, several commonly accepted versions of the lyrics exist. Four variations can be found on the children's songs website SwingSongs under "Beans, Beans," and two variations can be found on the website Idle Child.
Cultural references
Two episodes of The Simpsons reference the song:
- In the Season 4 episode "Whacking Day", Bart is enrolled in a private Christian school. In his first day of class there, Bart is immediately asked to recite a psalm; he responds by singing a verse of "Beans, Beans, the Musical Fruit" and is promptly expelled from the school.
- In the Season 6 episode "Bart of Darkness", the chalkboard gag has Bart writing "Beans are neither a fruit nor musical."
