The Atlas was started by the teacher P.R. Bos from Groningen. The first atlas was published in 1877 with the name Bos' Schoolatlas der geheele aarde. Later editions were named Bosatlas.
The reason for ist publication was the introduction of the subject geography in the former Ducth high schools. The maps were originally designed by hand. Publisher was Wolters, which continued to publish the atlas as Wolters-Noordhoff.
