It started operations in December 2002 taking over responsibility for flights from the collapsed national carrier Balkan Bulgarian Airlines. Bulgaria Air was set to be privatized in 2005 and although the government wanted to sell the carrier to a major foreign investor, a union of locally-owned companies, led by Hemus Air, emerged as a likely buyer.
