The Czech koruna ("koruna" means crown) has been the currency of the Czech Republic since February 8, 1993. It replaced the Czechoslovak koruna at par.

The official name in Czech is koruna česká (the plural form is "koruny české" but the genitive plural form "korun českých" is usually found on banknotes), the ISO 4217 code is CZK and the local acronym is Kč. One koruna equals 100 haléřů (abbreviated as "h", singular: haléř, nominative plural: haléře). The acronym is placed behind the numeric value.

The Czech Republic plans to adopt the euro in 2010.

Main article: Czech koruna coins

Coins are currently in circulation with denominations of 50h, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 korun. 20 korun is more commonly found as coins, whereas 50 korun is more common as a banknote. The 10 and 20 haléřů coins were taken out of circulation by 31 October 2003. The 50 korun coins are bimetallic.

Banknotes

The first Czeck banknotes issued in 1993 consisted of Czechoslovak notes with adhesive stamps affixed to them. Denominations of 100, 500 and 1000 korun were issued. They circulated between 8 February and 31 August 1993[1]. Regular banknotes of denominations 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000 korun were introduced later in 1993 or in 1994 and are all in use as of 2004.
