Doctor of Public Administration

The Doctor of Public Administration (DPA) is a professional degree in the field of government and non-profit management. DPA programs take two forms: a taught professional degree or a research-based terminal doctorate. The D.P.A is usually preceded by the Master of Public Administration or the Master of Public Policy.

Like a Ph.D., a DPA is normally a terminal research degree. While some course work may be involved, most of the credits for the course comes from a required doctoral dissertation that contributes to knowledge. A few DPA programs principally consist of coursework, with a minority of the credits for the course coming from the dissertation.

As of 2006, the following DPA programs in the United States are known to the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration.
