Education in Bangladesh

The education system in Bangladesh is a three-tiered, highly-subsidised one. The Ministry of Education operates many schools in the primary, secondary, and higher secondary level. It also subsidises parts of the funding for many private schools. In the tertiary education sector, the Government also funds more than 15 state universities through the University Grants Commission.

Levels of Education

In Bangladesh, there are 3 main levels of education, which are as follows:

Primary education

The primary level is from class 1 to class 5. There is no nation-wide examination at the end of class 5. However, the Government education boards conduct a scholarship examination at the end of class 5 to select meritorious students who are given a scholarship for the next 3 years of schooling.Government of Bangladesh distributes books to the students of primary schools for free. Sending children to the primary school is mandatory in Bangladesh. But lack of social awareness and poverty is a big threat for primary education. Government also distributes food in the primary schools to attract poor children to schools. Many schools in the secondary level also have primary sections.

There are two nation-wide public examinations in this level. The first one is called the Secondary School Certificate examination, conducted at the end of class 10. The other is called Higher Secondary Certificate examination, and is conducted at the end of class 12. These examinations are conducted by the seven education boards located at Barisal, Chittagong, Comilla, Dhaka, Jessore, Rajshahi, and Sylhet.
