The Federation of Arab Republics (Arabic اتحاد الجمهوريات العربية, ittiħād al-jumhūriyyāt al-`arabiyya, literally "Union of Arab Republics") was an abortive attempt by Libya's Muammar al-Qaddafi to merge Libya, Egypt, and Syria, creating a pan-Arab state. Although approved by referenda in each country in March 1972, [1] the three countries disagreed on the specific terms of the merger. The federation lasted from January 1, 1972 to March 1977.

It is not to be confused with the United Arab Republic (1958-1961) which was a somewhat more substantive union of Egypt and Syria.
