The dollar (currency code GYD) has been the currency of Guyana since 1966. It is normally abbreviated with the dollar sign $, or alternatively GY$ to distinguish it from other dollar-denominated currencies. It is divided into 100 cents, but cent coins are no longer used due to inflation.

For earlier currency of Guyana, see British Guiana guilder.

The Guyanese dollar was introduced when Guyana became independent in 1966, replacing the East Caribbean dollar at par.

Coins have been issued in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 cents and 1, 5 and 10 dollars.

Banknotes issued since 1966 are 1, 5, 10, 20, 100, 500 and 1,000 dollars, with the 1, 5, and 10 dollars no longer issued. New banknotes of 100 and 1000 dollars were issued in 2005 [1] with increased security features.
