Hainan Airlines (Chinese: 海南航空公司; Pinyin: Hǎinán Hángkōng Gōngsī) is an airline based in Haikou, Hainan, People's Republic of China. It is a privately owned airline and the fourth largest airline of China by fleet size. It operates a scheduled domestic services network based in Haikou on the island of Hainan and Ningbo on the mainland. It has begun to add international services. Its main base is Haikou Meilan International Airport (HAK), with hubs at Xi'an Xianyang International Airport (XIY) and Ningbo Lishe International Airport (NGB).

History
The airline was established in October 1989 as Hainan Province Airlines. It then renamed as Hainan Airlines and became China's first joint-stock air transport enterprise in January 1993 and began scheduled services on 2 May 1993. Executive jet operations with a Learjet 55 were added in April 1995. In 1998 it became the first Chinese airline to own shares in an airport when it purchased a 25% stake in Haikou Meilan International Airport. Hainan Airlines has 8,000 employees (at January 2005).
It owns stakes in a range of airlines: Shanxi Airlines (92.51%), Chang'an Airlines (73.51%), China Xinhua Airlines (60%), Shilin Airlines (48.9%) and Yangtze River Express (15%).

Hainan Airlines operates the following services (as of July 2006):
- Domestic scheduled destinations: Baotou, Beihai, Beijing, Changchun, Changsha, Changzhi, Chengdu, Chongqing, Dalian, Dongying, Fuzhou, Guangzhou, Guilin, Guiyang, Haikou, Hailar, Hangzhou, Harbin, Hefei, Hohhot, Jinan, Jingdezhen, Kashi, Kunming, Lanzhou, Mudanjiang, Nanchang, Nanjing, Nanning, Ningbo, Qingdao, Qiqihar, Sanya, Shanghai, Shantou, Shenyang, Shenzhen, Taiyuan, Tianjin, Ürümqi, Weifang, Wenzhou, Wuhan, Xi'an, Xiamen, Xining, Xuzhou, Yancheng, Yanji, Yichang, Yinchuan, Zhanjiang, Zhengzhou and Zhuhai.

The Hainan Airlines fleet includes the following aircraft (as of August 2006) [1]:

- 5 Boeing 767-300ER

Hainan Airlines has an order for 6 Airbus A319-100 aircraft. It has also finalised an order to purchase 8 Boeing 787 aircraft to be delivered between June 2008 and April 2010[2]
HNA Group bought 50 ERJ 145s and 50 EMBRAER 190s in total value of the firm aircraft at list price is US$ 2.7 billion. Deliveries will commence in September 2007 for the ERJ 145s. The 50-seat ERJ 145s will be produced by the joint venture Harbin Embraer Aircraft Industry (HEAI), in the city of Harbin, in Heilongjiang Province. For the EMBRAER 190, deliveries are planned to start in December 2007. The 106-seat EMBRAER 190, to be configured for single class service, will be manufactured at the plant of São José dos Campos, Brazil.
