ISO 3166-1 numeric
ISO 3166-1 numeric (or numeric-3) codes are 3-digit country codes in the ISO 3166-1 standard to represent countries and dependent areas. They are published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as part of its ISO 3166 standard, and correspond to the 3-digit country codes developed and maintained by the United Nations Statistics Division.

Script (writing system) independence
A major advantage of the numeric-3 codes over the ISO 3166 letter-based codes is script (writing system) independence; this independence comes of course at the cost of mnemonic convenience.
The letter-based codes used in ISO 3166 rely on Latin alphabet characters found in English and western European languages. For people and systems using non-Latin scripts (writing systems) – e.g. Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Cyrillic, Devanagari, Greek, Hangul, Japanese – Latin alphabet characters may be unavailable or difficult to use, understand or correctly interpret. Numeric-based codes overcome these problems of script dependence.
Assignment of new numeric-3 codes
New numeric-3 codes reflect changes in country boundaries but not country names. If countries merge or split up, new numeric codes are assigned for the affected countries. For example:
- When East Germany (coded 278) and West Germany (coded 280) merged in 1990, the unified Germany is coded 276 since then.
- When Eritrea (coded 232) broke away from Ethiopia (formerly coded 230) in 1993, Ethiopia is coded 231 since then.
If a country changes its name without territorial change, its numeric code remains the same. For example, when Burma was renamed Myanmar without territorial change, its numeric code 104 has remained the same.

User-assigned code elements
The numeric codes from 900 to 999 can be user-assigned. These code elements are at the disposal of users who need to add further names of countries, territories or other geographical entities to their in-house application of ISO 3166-1, and the ISO 3166/MA will never use them in the updating process of the standard.
Withdrawn codes
These codes have also been withdrawn from ISO 3166-1 since the first edition in 1974 (note that ISO 3166-1 does not have reserved numeric codes):
