Every year, many hundreds of dollars are spent on the extravaganza that attracts a great many residents of Melbourne to have a look. The display was started by George Whitelaw in the 1950s. Normally, in the week before Christmas, this suburban street is enclosed in a grid-lock as it attracts over 100 000 people over the nine day period of its display.
