Jizan or Jazan (Arabic: جيزان) is the capital of the Jizan Province in the far south-west of Saudi Arabia. The city is situated on the Red Sea coast and serves a large agricultural hinterland. It has a population of 100,694 (2004 census). In the north there are Farasan Islands. It is famous for its high-quality production of tropical fruits like mango, figs, papaya. Saudi Arabia annexed 'Asir, Najran, and Jizan from Yemen in 1934. In the later years, the area was in the front line of the war with the Yemen and the Saudi forces.
