This is a list of notable people who have undergone an amputation.

Activists

• Jerry White, cofounder and executive director of the Landmine Survivors Network.
• Terry Fox (deceased), Canadian marathon runner and Cancer Activist, lost his right leg due to cancer.

Actors

• Sarah Bernhardt (Deceased), had her leg amputated in 1915.
• James Doohan (deceased), lost a part of right middle finger, lost following landing at Juno Beach on D-Day.
• Darryl Hannah, missing a part of left index finger.
• Al Lewis a.k.a. "Grandpa Munster" (deceased), lost lower right leg and all toes on left foot due to complications of angioplasty surgery.
• Harold Russell (deceased), lost both hands in a dynamite accident during parachute training.
• Lee Van Cleef (deceased), was missing the last joint of his middle finger, which he lost while building a playhouse for his daughter. You can clearly see this during the last gunfight of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
• Robert David Hall, both legs amputated following a car accident in 1978

• Simona Atzori, Congenital double arm amputee.
• Doctor Atl (deceased), lost a leg due to disease.
• William Ernest Henley, poet, lost a foot due to tubercular infection. His best-remembered poem, Invictus, is said to have been written to as an ode to his own resiliency following this loss.
• Jackie Foster ("Jazzy Jackie") is an amputee artist who creates abstract acrylic paintings on canvas, using her residual finger nubbins as her "tools". Her paintings are stunning and lively. She lost the four fingers on one hand during a childhood accident. She is an autodidactic artist who uses paints as an extension of herself, using what could be considered a disability as an advantage.
• Big John Wrencher is a Blues singer, (1923 - 1977), lost his arm in a car accident in 1958, a marvelous one-armed singer and harmonica player.
• Rick Allen, born 11/1/1963, drummer from the rock group Def Leppard, lost his left arm at the shoulder due to an accident with his new Corvette on New Year's Eve, 1984

• Cotton Hill, a character in the animated series King of the Hill. A fictional World War II hero who had his shins "blowed off by a Japanman's machine gun" in combat. His feet were later reattached to his knees.
• Edward Elric, a character in the anime Fullmetal Alchemist. Lost his right arm and left leg in a Transmutation ritual. He later acquired advanced prosthetics called Automail.

• Thing (Addams Family), a disembodied hand who performs various useful functions for the Addams family.
• Al Robbins, a character from CSI, portrayed by Robert David Hall who is also an amputee.
• Anakin Skywalker, a character from the Star Wars saga. He was a Jedi Knight who later became a cyborg Sith Lord named Darth Vader. Lost all of his natural limbs in lightsaber duels with Count Dooku and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
• Tetsuo Shima, a character from the manga and anime movie AKIRA. A Japanese teenager with incredible psychokinetic powers. His right arm was completely disintegrated when he was shot from orbit by a laser satellite called the SOL.
• Joe Bonham, the protagonist of the novel (later released into a movie) Johnny Got His Gun who lost all of his limbs to a mortar during the World War I

• Art Buchwald, lost a leg due to a vascular condition.
• Eddie McGee, winner of the first season of Big Brother, lost a leg due to a childhood illness.
• Jay J. Armes, Private Investigator, City Council, Actor (Hawaii 5-O)
• Dagmar Berghoff, German TV-presenter. She was born missing two fingers at her left hand (cleft hand).
• Bree Walker is a well-known television network news anchor in San Diego, New York City, and Los Angeles. Walker decided to go public with her ectrodactyly, a rare congenital deformity: her fingers and toes are very short, deformed and fused together.

• Rick Allen, drummer for Def Leppard, lost his left arm in car crash, but continued drumming with his right arm and special machine he operates with his feet.
• Martin Deschamps, Canadian rock singer, born with left arm and right leg missing, as well as congenital deformities of the other limbs.
• Ella Fitzgerald (deceased), American blues singer, had both her legs amputated in 1993 due to complications from diabetes.
• Jerry Garcia (deceased), member of The Grateful Dead, missing half of his right middle finger due to an accident when he was four years old.
• Cole Porter, had his left leg amputated in his later years.
• Theresa Sareo, hit by a drunk driver, lost her right leg at the hip (see hip-disarticulation)
• Paul Wittgenstein, brother of philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, lost his right arm in World War I but continued his career as a classical pianist.
• Liz Pennock can tickle the ivories with the best of them. She'll soon have you singing and swaying to her boogie-woogie blues. All the more unusual because Pennock only has six fingers—three on each hand.
• Lari White, Lari already sang as a child with parents and brothers and sisters in the gospel song group "White Family Singers ". In addition, she played guitar and piano. Also by the loss of a little finger she couldn't be discouraged.
• Gianna Nannini is an Italian female singer-songwriter and rock musician. Gianna Nannini's parents would have imagined the career of her daughter apparently than she has come now a bit differently. She would have shall become actually classic pianist, has broken off education, though this when she "started to cut" several fingers at the work in the parental business on a machine.

Blues singer and harmonica player; Lost his arm in a car accident in Memphis in 1958.was forced to learn to play with only one hand. Played on Maxwell street Chicago for years.

• Lucien Bouchard, former Leader of the Opposition in Canada and former Premier of Quebec, lost a leg to necrotizing fasciitis in 1994.
• Max Cleland, American Senator, lost an arm and both legs when he served in the Vietnam War.
• Tammy Duckworth, candidate for Illinois' 6th district in the House of Representatives in 2006, lost both legs in Iraq.
• Corky Evans, Canadian politician, missing a finger on his left hand.
• Wade Hampton III, lost his right leg.
• Daniel Inouye, United States Senator, lost an arm during World War II. Recipient of the Medal of Honor.
• Bob Kerrey, former U.S. Senator and Governor of Nebraska, lost right lower leg to a Russian-built grenade in Vietnam as a Navy SEAL officer. Awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions.
• Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Brazilian president, finger amputee.
• Helmut Zilk, former mayor of Vienna, hand amputee after opening letter bomb.
• Marmaduke Hussey, former chairman of the BBC. Lost leg during World War II.
• Josip Broz Tito, former president of Yugoslavia, leg amputated but he died shortly after.
• Katalin Szili, is the President of the National Assembly of Hungary. Lost her left hand in the age of 12 years. A hand grenade from the second World War exploded in her hands.

• Douglas Bader, WW2 British fighter pilot, lost legs in training flight. Prisoner of war in Germany after being shot down in dogfight.

• Daniel Chick, current Australian rules footballer, had left ring finger amputated in 2002 after chronic dislocation.
• Brett Backwell, Australian rules footballer, had left ring finger amputated in 2005 following chronic breakage and dislocation of the finger.
• Paulo Diogo, Portuguese soccer player, had left ring finger ripped off on fence post whilst celebrating goal in a match in 2004, had to have remain of stump amputated at first joint.
• Stuart Williams, ex-West Indian cricketer, had pinky finger chopped off after gangrene set in.
• Cameron Clapp (sportsman and media personality) lost both legs above the knees and his right arm at the shoulder in a railway accident when he was aged 15.
• Deborah Compagnoni (born June 4, 1970) is an Italian former Alpine skier who won three gold medals at the 1992, 1994 and 1998 Winter Olympics. One day in the hotel kitchen she placed her left hand in a meat grinder, and she was staring at the white nub of bone when she heard her grandmother screaming. They rushed her down the mountain to the hospital. Today her index finger ends where the nail should begin.
