The whole district is made up of a small island group south of Tønsberg, including the islands Nøtterøy, Føynland, Veierland, and about 175 smaller islands. Nøtterøy includes the villages Borgheim, Teie and Torød
Prime ministers Trygve Bratteli and Jan P. Syse came from Nøtterøy.
