Ship-owner

Ship owners can be owners of small personal watercraft such as motor boats or sailboats. But generally, ship owners refer to owners of commercial ships. A ship owner is the person who equips and exploits a ship, usually for delivering cargo at a certain freight rate. Ship owners never are actually on the ship, and they hire a licenced crew and captain.
