The Southern California Institute of Architecture, founded in 1972 by Ray Kappe, is an independent institute granting undergraduate and graduate degrees in Architecture. SCI-Arc, as it's commonly referred to, relocated from Santa Monica in 2001 and is presently located in the Artist District in Downtown Los Angeles on Santa Fe St, between 3rd and 4th in a former train depot. The move was overseen by the then director of the school, Neil Denari.

SCI-Arc is widely regarded as one of the most avant-garde U.S. architecture schools,[citation needed] with a reputation for pushing at the boundaries of academic study. The school has also historically had close links with the wider community and conducted numerous projects that seek to engage with the most under-privileged members of the city in which it is based.

It occupies a historic railroad building.
