Yunnan University
Yunnan University (YNU) is a prestigious university in China. Its main campus lies in urban Kunming city, Yunnan province.
Founded in 1923, YNU was named as "Dong Lu University", and "Dong Lu" means "orient continent" in English. The founder of YNU is general TANG Jiyao, the actual dominator of Yunnan province in 1920s. The university was renamed as Yunnan University in 1934.
YNU was very famous in World War II since Kunming is not directly involved in battles, so a great amount of Chinese excellent scholars retreated to the city and taught in YNU. In 1946, there were five faculties as well as 18 academic departments in YNU. In the British Encyclopedia 1946, YNU was included in the top fifteen universities in China.
The government of China Communist party made a reform to Chinese education in 1950s, Yunnan University was involved in also. Most departments were separated out. In 1958, only two faculties and six academic departments left in University.
Like all other Chinese universities, YNU had experienced a difficult period in 1970s. In 1980s, YNU began to develop quickly.
Now YNU has more than 20000 students and 1400 academic staff. There are 20 faculties (colleges). It is listed in top 70 Chinese Universities and its school of law ranked in top 30.
